KUCHING: Two contract signings took place here yesterday at the Riverside Majestic Hotel to kick-off the construction of Plaza Merdeka slated to be the largest department store in Kuching comprising 135,000 sq ft.The ceremony encompassed the signing of a construction contract between Bina Puri Construction Sdn Bhd and Rakyat Elite Sdn Bhd and the signing of an anchor tenant contract between Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd and Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd.
Being the oldest part of town, the site that was acquired exactly two years ago is scheduled for completion in March 2012 and is the first large brownfield redevelopment project in Kuching.
The managing director of Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd, Steve Ng said during a speech at the ceremony: “We are grateful to Bina Puri Construction Sdn Bhd for its cooperation, in particular to Datuk Henry Tee to have mobilised the project prior to a formal contract being executed. This has enabled us to save about three months and construction is now in full progress.”
He added that having secured Parkson Corporation as a key anchor tenant in Plaza Merdeka has had a good impact as the company has received quite a number of strong enquiries from sub anchor tenants and nationally recognised retailers.
“This is very exciting as a having a store of this size opens up huge retailing possibilities and it will be one of the major draws. Also, as a result of Parkson’s endorsement, we will be working closely with some nationally recognised retailers and we fully expect to secure commitments from them in the near future,” he expressed.
Ng explained that Plaza Merdeka is going to be the same yet differ in some aspects from other major shopping centres because it will be a component of the revitalisation of the picturesque and historic district of Kuching City.
