Plaza Merdeka, since opening its doors, has been a proud member of the revitalization of Kuching’s historical district. The plaza has transformed this rather tranquil area of the city into a landmark that is now pulsating with energy and vibrancy.
Located in the heart of Kuching city, it is only steps away from the picturesque and buzzing waterfront. Also close by is Chinatown with its quaint streets, several temples, the renowned Sarawak Museum, the old State Mosque with its five golden domes, pre-World War One shops and many other streets and lanes brimming with history and other noteworthy heritage buildings too numerous to mention.
The plaza has a gross area of 550,000 square feet with a net lettable area of 350,000 sq. ft. and it’s the first mall in Kuching that has the largest video wall that comprises of 36 screens.
Complementing the plaza is the five-star boutique hotel, named The Waterfront Hotel. Viewing from the hotel that’s perched atop the plaza, one can get a panoramic view of the river, the Astana, the State Legislative or Dewan Undangan Negeri building, and Fort Margherita on one side; while Padang Merdeka and Sarawak Museum are on the other. Plaza Merdeka congratulates Ms. Yolanda David – Reyes on her exemplary effort and contributions.
Plaza Merdeka won the most innovative shopping centre award under the stand-alone shopping centres category at the 19th Malaysia Tourism Awards 2015. The few strong attributes which enable the shopping centre to win the prestige award for the first time is its cleanliness, the professional management, the trade mix, and its active participation in local events like, to name a few, Malaysia Super Sale, Street Dancing competitions, Moon Cake festival, Chinese New Year, and Hari Raya. It has also played a supporting role in some international events like the Kuching Marathon and Cycleahon which put Plaza Merdeka on the map and enhances its profile.
Additional events which Plaza Merdeka is involved on an annual basis include Kuching Marathon, MIMMA (Malaysia Invasion Mixed Martial Arts), fashion shows, festive bazaars, and regatta.
Among other notable achievements of Plaza Merdeka is clinching the Best Toilet Award 2014, and getting it in the Malaysia Book of Records the ‘Biggest Bowl of Laksa Sarawak 2016’ endorsed by Chef Wan and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib.
